Starting a new course can be intimidating, especially if you have been out of formal study for a while (which is true for most of our students at Diya). Here is a clear picture of your first month at our institute.
Week 1: Confidence and foundations
The first few sessions are intentionally easy. You will meet your 5 classmates — we keep batches small, max 6 — get to know me, and learn basics: fashion design vocabulary, the fashion calendar, basic body proportion drawing (no need to be an artist), and different fabric families.
By Friday of week 1, you will have your first hand-drawn croquis sketch. They are meant to be rough at this stage.
Week 2: Drawing and pattern thinking
We move from observation to creation:
- Sketching from your imagination
- Adding flat sketches (technical drawings)
- Learning to read existing patterns
- Understanding why certain patterns produce certain shapes
Most of week 2 happens at the drawing table. Bring a notebook.
Week 3: Fabrics and your first garment plan
Now we get tactile. Field visit to a local fabric market on Saturday. Each student picks a fabric and explains why. Drafting your first pattern from measurements. Pattern cutting on paper. This is the week most students fall in love with the course — the abstract becomes concrete.
Week 4: Construction begins
By week 4, you are setting up the sewing machine confidently, working on first seams and hems, transferring patterns to fabric, and cutting your first piece. You will not finish a garment yet — that comes around week 6 in the advanced course — but you will have everything you need to.
What to bring on day 1
- A notebook and pen
- Comfortable clothes — you will move around
- Curiosity, not fear
Sewing tools and supplies are provided by the institute. You can bring your own sewing machine from home if you have one, but we have machines for class use.
The most common question
“Will I be the slowest student?” No. Every batch has different paces. We adapt. One-on-one attention is built into the course.
