Step 1: Pick your niche
Trying to be everything to everyone is the fastest way to fail. Pick one of these and stick with it:
- Blouse tailoring — high demand, repeat customers
- Bridal wear customisation — high margins, longer cycles
- Salwar-kurta sets — volume play
- Saree blouse stitching with embroidery — premium positioning
Step 2: Your equipment (₹15,000-20,000)
- One reliable sewing machine: ₹8,000-12,000 (Usha or Singer entry-level)
- One overlock/serger: ₹6,000-8,000
- Basic tools (scissors, measuring tape, pins, threads): ₹2,000
- Iron and ironing board: ₹2,000
Buy used or refurbished from local sellers in Vidyanagar or Dajibanpeth to save 30-40%.
Step 3: A small fabric inventory (₹10,000-15,000)
Do not stockpile. Start small with 5-6 basic blouse pieces in safe colours, 2-3 bridal-tier fabrics for samples, linings and threads in 8-10 colours, and 1-2 unique fabrics that show your style.
Step 4: Workspace and signage (₹5,000-10,000)
You do not need a shop. Many of our successful alumni start from home with a clean, dedicated room, a “Diya Boutique” board outside the home, simple business cards, and a WhatsApp Business account.
Step 5: Marketing (₹5,000)
- Open an Instagram account, post 3 times a week
- Get a photographer to shoot 10 sample pieces (₹3,000)
- Get listed on Google Business (free, takes one afternoon)
- Tell your existing network — WhatsApp 50-100 people you know
The honest truth
You will not earn much in month 1 or 2. Most of our alumni start breaking even in month 3-4 and become profitable by month 6. Discounts on first 10 orders to build word-of-mouth are worth it. Quality work, on-time delivery, and consistent communication beat marketing budget every time.
